Dog food - what to pay attention to when choosing it?

When choosing the right food for your dog, you must first consider your pet's requirements. Every dog is different and needs a diet that suits their lifestyle, activity level and size. There is no single dog food formula that will work for dogs of all breeds and ages. When it comes to choosing the right food for your dog, every little detail can make a difference. So, when choosing a food for your dog, think about all the details. Remember that your local Husse nutritionist will be more than happy to help you find the right food for your dog. Additionally, our Find the Perfect Food tool can help you choose a dog food. But let's go back to the beginning. What to consider when choosing a dog food?

Age of the dog

Start with your dog's age. Puppies need a completely different diet than adult dogs. In the first year of life, the dog food must provide your pet with all the vitamins and minerals to support the healthy growth and development of the puppy, but also will ensure an optimal digestive health. In adulthood, the right food for your dog will ensure your pet's well-being for an optimal, long lifespan. Older dogs also need to receive a formula tailored to their needs because their nutritional requirements change and evolve with age. An elderly dog is usually less active and does not need as much energy in its diet as adult and active dogs. Food with too high fat content and high calories and an older and less active pet can lead to weight gain, overweight and even obesity. In old age dogs may develop joint problems, food sensitivity or digestive problems. The right food for an older dog will support the work of the joints and will not irritate the sensitive stomach of a senior dog.

Dog size

Dog food must be properly selected not only for their age, but also for their size. The energy demand of large breed dogs will be much lower than that of the small breeds. In addition, the size of the kibbles is important here. A dry food for a small breed dog will have much smaller kibbles that dogs with smaller jaws will easily chew on. In contrast, dog food for large and giant breeds must have larger kibbles that large dogs will not be able to swallow whole so easily. In large breed dogs, only the increased size of the kibbles and their texture will support the mechanical cleaning of the teeth.

Individual needs

Do you have a sterilised dog at home? Or maybe your pet has digestive sensitivities or grain intolerance? What about weight management? Is your dog prone to weigh gain? In the Dry Food line, you can easily find a formula that will perfectly match the specific dietary requirements of your pet.

Is dry dog food a good choice?

DDry dog food is the best way to feed your dog. In our recipes, we select only the highest quality ingredients that give our formulas excellent flavour. Why else is it worth choosing dry dog food? Not all pets are used to brushing their teeth, and some dogs really don't like brushing. Dry dog food is an additional aid in reducing plaque and tartar, as the crunchy kibbles support the mechanical cleaning of the teeth during the meal. For many pet owners, its great advantage is the fact that dry dog food is easy to store and does not deteriorate as quickly as wet food when opened. Dry dog food is also easy to portion and very hygienic. The convenience of portioning is especially useful when introducing a new food - it will be much easier for you to measure portions of the new and existing food and mix them together in the right proportions to gradually get your dog used to the new composition of the food. With a diet based on dry food, however, remember to provide your pet with constant access to water.
